The Ultimate Baha Mar Family Guide: Everything I’ve Learned After 15+ Trips
Where to stay, what to do, where to eat, childcare, Baha Bay, animal encounters—and why our family keeps going back.
There are very few places we travel to over and over again, but Baha Mar is the exception.
We've been to Baha Mar more than 15 times at this point. We typically go anywhere from one to four times a year, we've stayed for as long as 10 days at a time, we've taken our kids, we've gone with friends, and we've done adults-only trips.
And somehow, we still haven't done everything there is to do.
That's probably the best way I can explain Baha Mar.
It isn't just a hotel where you spend your days sitting by the same pool. It's essentially an entire vacation destination, with three hotels, Baha Bay water park, tons of pools, a beautiful beach, wildlife experiences, kids clubs, babysitting, restaurants, shopping, mini golf, a casino, golf, spas, nightlife and so much more.
We very rarely leave the property once we arrive—and we never feel like we're missing anything by staying there.
For our family, it has become one of those rare destinations that genuinely works for everyone. Babies, little kids, bigger kids, teenagers, parents, grandparents and adults traveling without kids can all have completely different vacations at the exact same resort.
And that's why we keep going back.
Why Baha Mar Is So Easy From the U.S.
Baha Mar is located on Cable Beach in Nassau, Bahamas, and one of my favorite things about it is how easy it is to get there.
There are nonstop flights to Nassau from many cities in the U.S., including Houston, where we fly from. And if you're connecting through somewhere like Miami, the actual flight over to Nassau is incredibly quick.
Once you land, Baha Mar is only about a 12-minute drive from Nassau's airport.
That means you can leave home in the morning and realistically be sitting by a turquoise pool in the Bahamas that afternoon—which is especially appealing when you're traveling with kids.
Which hotel should you choose?
There are three hotels on the property: Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, SLS Baha Mar and Rosewood Baha Mar.
The nice part is that you're still within the larger Baha Mar resort regardless of which hotel you choose.
My very simplified explanation is:
Grand Hyatt is my pick for families and where we personally stay every single time.
SLS has a younger, trendier feel and is great if nightlife and a more adult atmosphere are important to you.
Rosewood is the most intimate and ultra-luxury option. It also has some of its own amenities, including a separate children's program for Rosewood guests.
Where We Stay: The Reserve at Grand Hyatt
We personally stay at The Reserve at Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, and when we're traveling with our whole family, we usually stay in a two-bedroom residence.
For a large family, having that extra space makes a huge difference.
One of my favorite Reserve benefits is the lounge, which includes breakfast in the morning. Food at Baha Mar can definitely add up, so being able to feed everyone breakfast before heading to the pool or water park is such a nice benefit.
Then we know we're inevitably going to be ordering lunch, snacks and drinks throughout the day anyway.
Depending on the accommodation you book, you may also have butler service—and use your butler!
We've had ours grab coffee for us in the morning, pick up milk or something we need from the market, check on reservations and even grab takeout from one of the restaurants when we don't feel like going out.
Of course, we always take care of them and tip for the extra help, but those little conveniences make traveling with kids so much easier.
And the room service at Baha Mar is really good, too.
Our Favorite Way to Spend a Pool Day
There are a LOT of pools at Baha Mar, but after all of our trips, we definitely have a routine.
With the Kids: Baha Bay
We love spending our days at Baha Bay, Baha Mar's beachfront water park. Admission to Baha Bay is included for registered Baha Mar resort guests, so you can use it throughout your stay.
Because we're a big family, we usually reserve either chairs in the more private pool area or, ideally, one of the cabanas.
If you want a cabana, book it ahead of time.
There are only a handful in the area we like, and they're all located together up top, so I don't have a particular cabana number that I think you need.
For us, the cabana becomes home base for the entire day.
We have somewhere comfortable to come back to, the cabanas have drinks and fruit, and we're right at the water park. The pool itself is also much calmer than some of the busier resort pools because access to that particular area is limited.
There's even a shallow shelf where little kids who aren't strong swimmers can play.
Meanwhile, the older kids can go back and forth to the water park.
We inevitably end up spending a lot of time at Kids Island, too. Stingray Cove has eight slides and water features for kids, while Turtle Beach was specifically designed for the littlest guests with shallow water and smaller slides.
It makes Baha Bay work surprisingly well even when you have kids at completely different ages.
Without the Kids: Nexus Club
When we have childcare and want some adult time, one of our favorite places to go is the Nexus Club rooftop pool.
It's adults-only, there's food, and the hot tub is one of my favorite places to relax because there aren't kids splashing around you.
If you have access, definitely take advantage of it. We have access through our Reserve stays, and it's one of those quieter parts of Baha Mar that makes the resort just as enjoyable on an adults-only trip.
why we love baha mar’s childcare options
This deserves its own section because I think Baha Mar does family travel particularly well.
The main Kids Explorers Club is for children ages 3–12 and includes games, creative activities, wildlife experiences and other programming.
Our kids love going, and we've always had really positive experiences with the staff.
But what's even more useful to us is that Baha Mar offers babysitting and Baha Buddies, too.
You can arrange for a babysitter to stay with your children in your room, or a Baha Buddy can actually accompany your children around Baha Bay.
We use these services.
And I think that's worth saying because sometimes family vacations turn into a week of Mom and Dad parenting in a prettier location.
When we're spending the money to take a vacation, we want it to feel like a vacation for us, too.
Having trusted childcare right on the property means we can spend the morning doing things together as a family, have someone help with the kids later, and actually go sit by an adults-only pool, have dinner together or enjoy the casino.
That's a huge part of why Baha Mar works so well for us.
If Your Kids Love Animals, Baha Mar Is AMAZING
We are huge animal lovers, so we've probably done just about every animal experience Baha Mar offers.
Baha Mar has an entire wildlife and conservation program with flamingos, sea turtles, nurse sharks, stingrays, tropical birds, macaws and Aldabra tortoises.

We always do the up-close flamingo encounter. It’s one of our favorite animal experiences at Baha Mar.
But here’s something I love: you don’t have to book a private encounter to see them. There’s also a flamingo walk through the property, so even if you don’t book an encounter, you can still see them up close. Check the current resort schedule during your stay because times can change.

The tortoises are another one we love, especially with the kids. You can get surprisingly close to them and even feed them during the encounter. It feels much more intimate than simply seeing animals from a distance, which is why this is one we’ve enjoyed doing more than once.

Baha Mar also offers experiences with sea turtles, nurse sharks and stingrays through The Sanctuary. These take place around open marine habitats, so you’re getting a really close look at the animals.
There’s also a touch tank, which my kids LOVE. If you have children who are fascinated by marine life, definitely spend some time here.

This is such a fun one for kids. You can go into the aviary with seed sticks, and the birds will actually come over and land right on your hand to eat.
My kids love how interactive it is, and it’s an easy animal experience to fit into your day without feeling like a huge excursion.

We’ve done the macaw experience in the past and loved it. It’s another opportunity to get really close to the animals rather than simply seeing them around the resort.
There may be age or participation requirements for this experience, so I’d check the current rules when you’re booking your trip.
MY TIP: Don't try to cram every animal experience into one day. Spread them throughout the trip. It gives the kids something different to look forward to each day.
There Is SO Much More Than the Water Park
This is why I laugh when someone asks what there is to do at Baha Mar.
The better question is: How much time do you have?
There's mini golf, the Game Zone arcade, tennis, pickleball, golf, water sports, art experiences, wildlife, pools, the beach, spas, the casino, shopping and activities happening around the resort. The Baha Mar app is particularly useful because it has an interactive property map plus current activities, hours and restaurant reservations.
There's even a Baha Mar Quest treasure-hunt app now that lets families complete challenges around the property.
And Baha Mar has added Sandy Cay, a huge under-the-sea-themed playground with sand, slides, climbing structures, swings and giant sea-creature structures.

Where We Actually Eat at Baha Mar
I'm not going to give you a list of every restaurant at Baha Mar because there are more than 45 restaurants, bars and lounges across the property.
Instead, these are the places we actually go back to.

One of my favorites with our kids.
It's beautiful at night because you sit around the koi ponds, and my kids are obsessed with watching and feeding the fish. It's one of those restaurants where the setting is almost as much a part of the experience as dinner.

Our go-to for Mediterranean food. This is always an easy yes for us and has plenty of things our entire family will eat. get the Fererro Rocher dessert!

Another favorite when we want Asian food or sushi. They also have plenty of kid-friendly options, so this is an easy one for us even if the kids aren't feeling adventurous

I love Marcus because it's right by the beach.
Get the fried chicken. And the biscuits.
At dinner, the fried chicken presentation is so much fun, but Marcus also serves during the day, so don't completely write it off if you can't get the dinner reservation you want.

Possibly one of my most practical Baha Mar recommendations.
There are nights after a full day in the sun when I simply do not want to get everyone showered, dressed and sitting through another dinner.
We'll order a big pizza, take it outside, sit on the grass and let the kids run around.
And honestly? Pizza Lab is actually really good.

We love this for breakfast and pastry stops throughout the day. They have an amazing bakery selection, fresh juices and really good coffee. The morning line can get long since it's counter service, but the food and drinks are worth it. On select days they're open throughout the day for breakfast, lunch and dinner, too.
BOOK DINNER BEFORE YOUR TRIP
This is one thing I wouldn't wait on.
Popular dinner reservations can fill up, so once you know you're going to Baha Mar, start making your dining reservations rather than waiting until you arrive. Baha Mar itself recommends reservations and lets guests book restaurants through its app.
Do You Need to Leave Baha Mar?
In my opinion?
No.
We rarely leave.
There's certainly plenty to see around Nassau and the Bahamas, and you absolutely can plan excursions if that's something your family enjoys.
But we don't feel like we need to.
There are markets on the property where we can grab milk, snacks, diapers and other things we might need. There is also plenty of shopping throughout Baha Mar.
We don't personally make a grocery-store run when we arrive.
Things are generally more expensive in the Bahamas, including food and convenience items, so we just build that into our expectations for the trip.
For us, the convenience of arriving, unpacking and basically not having to think about transportation again until we're going back to the airport is worth a lot.
You Can Do Baha Mar Two Completely Different Ways
This is something I think gets overlooked.
Baha Mar can be a huge, go-all-out luxury vacation.
Book a large residence. Get the cabana. Do animal encounters. Use childcare. Eat at the restaurants every night. Go to the spa. Golf. Shop. Make it a whole thing.
We love doing Baha Mar that way.
But you don't have to. Baha Mar can also be done with a budget in mind. There are SO many food options, not every single day needs to be a sit down restaurant. You can easily grab a pizza, a burger from the burger stand, enjoy any of the delicious air stream style food trucks, and not break the bank!
Choose a more standard room. Eat breakfast before starting your day. Spend your time at the beach and pools. Take advantage of your included Baha Bay access. See the flamingos. Walk around the wildlife areas. Enjoy the property and choose which extras actually matter to your family.
There's already so much available without scheduling an additional paid experience every hour.
That's one of the reasons I think Baha Mar can work for many different kinds of families.
What I Would Book Before Arriving
If you've made it this far and you're actually planning a trip, this is the part I'd screenshot:
Your room, obviously—and if you're a larger family, really look at the suite and residence configurations. Outside of The Reserve, Hyatt also offers dedicated family suites!
Dinner reservations, especially for the restaurants you're most excited about.
A Baha Bay cabana if having a home base at the water park is important to you.
Kids club/childcare for any time you know you want adults-only plans. You should book babysitters at least 24 hours in advance if you want private service.
Animal encounters that are must-dos for your family. These book up quick!
Spa, golf or other specific experiences you know you'll be disappointed to miss.
Then leave some room in your schedule to just enjoy the resort.
You don't need every minute planned.
Why We Keep Coming Back
I've traveled to Baha Mar more than 15 times.
I've spent 10 straight days there.
I've brought my kids. I've gone without my kids. We've traveled with friends. We've gone back multiple times in the same year.
And I still don't feel like we've done everything.
That's why I recommend it so often.
There aren't many destinations where I can have a baby, little kids and older kids with me and still feel like my husband and I are getting a vacation, too.
The kids can spend the morning flying down waterslides and feeding tortoises. We can spend the afternoon together at the pool. They can go to Kids Explorers or hang with a Baha Buddy while we escape to an adults-only rooftop pool. Then we can all meet back up, eat dinner over the koi ponds at Costa and watch the kids run around afterward.
And the next day can look completely different.
That's Baha Mar.
It's not necessarily a destination you go to because you want to check things off a list.
We go because it's easy, it's beautiful, our kids love it, we love it, and everyone in our family gets to have their own version of a vacation.
And apparently, after 15+ trips, we're still not tired of it.
A Few Things to Know Before You Go
Download the Baha Mar app. It's useful for restaurant reservations, maps, activities and what's happening around the resort.
Don't over-schedule yourself. There is always something happening.
Book the things you really care about ahead of time. Particularly restaurants, childcare, cabanas and special experiences.
Expect food and convenience items to cost more than you're used to at home. I wouldn't let that surprise you when you arrive.
And don't feel like you need to leave the resort. You could—but after all these trips, we rarely do.
